Guardianship

In order to continue our breeding program while giving our dogs the life they deserve, we will occasionally reserve a puppy from a litter for the purpose of future breeding. These specially chosen puppies will epitomize the breed standard and help us to continue providing quality Cobberdogs for pets and service. It is most common for us to reserve a female, but we will occasionally hold a male back. Guardian families will receive the puppy free of cost and in exchange will live within 60 miles of our home in Hanson, MA, will work with us to complete all required genetic testing/screening, and when it’s time, coordinate with us for breeding.

Female dogs held for breeding will have three well planned litters. Typically they will come to our home for whelping and will remain with us until the puppies are ready to wean (around six weeks old). During this time guardian families will be allowed to visit mama dog and her pups. Once safe to do so following her last litter, we will pay for the dog to be spayed and she will retire into the same home with her family that she has known her whole life.

Male dogs will need to be available for breedings as requested, as well as all genetic testing completed by female dogs.

It is incredibly important that all dogs in the guardianship program live in a home with a secured fenced yard or have space to a secured fenced space. If you do not have such a space but feel you have a valid alternative plan, please explain that in your outreach to us. Once a guardian family is chosen and they pick up their puppy, we will sign a contract that protects both our breeding program as well as the guardian family. A copy of this contract can be available for review to aid in decision making upon request.
